Degree Requirements

The Microcomputers for Business Option at Joliet Junior College prepares students for an outstanding career in Management Information Systems (MIS). MIS professionals collect and analyze data in various formats. The field of management information systems involves applying computer technology, quantitative techniques, and administrative skills to the information processing requirements of organizations. MIS combines computer technology with management decision-making methods - to analyze, design, implement, and manage computerized information systems in an organizational environment.

This degree program provides the extensive hands-on experience in Microsoft Office applications. The capstone course of the degree (CIS 175) offers the opportunity to prepare for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification. This highly recognized certification is sought after by companies and corporations. As with any technical career, continual update of skills is highly encouraged. In addition, we encourage students to continue the educational development by continuing with their education after graduation from Joliet Junior College.

Information-technology professionals are among the most sought-after talent in the job market today - but companies seek candidates with solid speaking and writing skills because presentations to clients and working with sales and marketing teams are part of the normal job requirements. There is strong demand for professionals with experience in so-called “enterprise-wide solutions.” Industry experience is a plus but not necessary to land good job offers. All the major consulting firms are competing for systems analysis talent.

Typical job titles include: systems analyst, database manager, computer specialist, network administrator, software developer, project managers/lead, information technology consultant, and applications developer.  Individuals who work in the field of management information systems can work in industries like: accounting, consumer products, banking, technology, shipping, and government.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field will grow much faster than average for many years, which provides individuals with more career options and job security.
