Note: Associate in Applied Science-Must complete with a minimum GPA of 2.75

The Associate of Applied Science degree and the Certificate of Achievement in Human Services will provide students with a broad base of knowledge through an interdisciplinary curriculum. Individuals seeking employment or career mobility in helping professions or other community based organizations require a knowledge base which includes skills in prevention, disability awareness, and issues of domestic violence, along with courses that will build problem solving skills and strengthen one’s ability to work with diverse populations in a variety of settings. Graduates will not only provide direct client care but also serve in advocacy roles. A credential in Human Services will increase credibility among social and human service professionals.

There are a variety of related occupations in the Social/Human Service category. Some identified by the Illinois Career Information System (https://ilcis.intocareers.org) include: Job Benefits and Analysis Specialists, Occupational Therapists, Personal and Home Care Aides, Residential Counselors, and Social Workers. Related programs of study include: Community Services, Gerontology, Human Services, Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Addiction Counseling, Child Care Services Management, Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, General Family Resource Management, Ministry, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Continuing study at four-year institutions may be required in many categories.

Admission Requirements

Students should be aware that a majority of the work done in this field will involve Children. Therefore it requires a criminal background check, including finger printing in order to complete volunteer or work in settings with children based on the State of Illinois DCFS criteria.
