The Associate in Applied Science degree in Respiratory Care will offer the study of theory and techniques instrumental in diagnosis, treatment, management, and preventive care of patients with cardiopulmonary problems. It will prepare the student to become a well-rounded professional and competent advanced respiratory therapist. The graduate will be eligible to take the entry-level respiratory care practitioner examination to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist and the advanced level respiratory care practitioner examination to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Successful completion of the program can lead to employment as a respiratory therapist in hospitals, clinics, or home settings or branch off into research, sales, education, or other career opportunities.

Respiratory Care Program

Students must meet the following prerequisites prior to application. Please read carefully to ensure all steps have been completed.

· Current application to the college found at www.jjc.edu/admissions. Be sure to select Associates in Arts as the degree and Respiratory Care Therapy as the intended major

· Must meet residency requirements as defined by Joliet Junior College.

· High School transcript or GED on file with the Admissions Office verifying completion.

· Completion of ENG 101, BIO 149 (or BIO 151), BIO 250, BIO 251, SOC 290 and with a grade of “C” or better.

· Minimum CUM GPA of 2.5 or above.

· All college transcripts (other than JJC) must be evaluated and placed on record prior to submission of the student’ application for the program. (This process can take up to four weeks.) Official college transcripts should be mailed to Joliet Junior College, Academic Credentials Office, 1215 Houbolt Road Joliet, IL 60431-8938.

Admissions to Respiratory Care Therapy AAS Program will be determined by a point ranking system. Each eligible applicant will be given a number for anonymity by the admissions office. Applications will be sent to the Respiratory Care Therapy Admissions Committee to be scored and ranked by the following criteria:

· GPA (calculated on courses required for the Respiratory Care Therapy Program only).

· Number of required general education classes completed.

TEAS composite and science scores. Qualified applicants will be required to take the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills Test (TEAS). The fee for this test will be approximately $90 to be paid by the applicant. The TEAS test needs to be completed by April 1^st. We encourage applicants to only take the exam one time per semester. If the TEAS test is taken multiple times in a semester, the committee will ONLY consider the score from the initial time it was taken during that semester.
