BIO 105 - Microbes and You

This laboratory course explores microbial life, particularly in our day-to-day life, and develops scientific literacy enabling students to make well-informed decisions.  Concepts include cell and molecular biology, microbial structure and function, genetics and heredity, evolution and ecology.  Students examine the microbes’ roles in health and disease and their impact on our ecology and economy, including biotechnology..  This course is not suitable for biology, nursing, or allied health majors.  Students who are pregnant or may become pregnant during the course of the semester are strongly advised to consult with their doctor before enrolling in this course.  Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) number Gen Ed IAI Number(s): L1 903L. Prerequisite: ENG 021 with a minimum grade of C and ENG 099 with minimum grade of C or ENG 096 with a minimum grade of C or satisfactory placement scores into ENG 021 and ENG 099, or ENG 096; and MATH 090 with a minimum grade of C or satisfactory placement score into MATH 090. A “C” or better is needed in ENG 021, 099, 096, and MATH 090.
