HIST 240 - History of Latin AmericaLecture - Lab - Credit Hours: 3-0-3 An introductory survey of Latin American history from pre-Columbian times to the present. The course focuses on various historical issues and problems, including human and physical geography; indigenous civilizations; European expansion and colonization; problems of race, ethnicity, class and gender; colonial economic, political, constitutional, and religious structures; struggle for independence; 20th century search for political and economic stability; and environmental degradation; population expansion; rapid urbanization; relations with the United States; and the place of Latin America in the post-Cold War reconfiguration of the world.
