Graduates of JJC’s Floral Design/Interior Plantscaping program have experience and skills in basic western, party and event work, as well as care and handling of fresh-cut materials. Students gain a working knowledge of care and maintenance of a variety of tropical plants used in the interior plantscaping industry. Jobs exist in retail floral shops, grocery store chains, as well as in wholesale floral supply operations. Students can also work in the interior plantscaping world as plant technicians and designers. Installing holiday designs and maintaining indoor plantings are part of this occupation. Many students go on to start their own businesses. Some start traditional retail businesses and others offer design services from a studio location. Jobs also exist in the freelance world of floral design. Students will complete 2 internship training periods at a floral or interior plantscaping job site as part of their program of study.
Opportunities are good for individuals who want to apply their skills and educational background in careers in the floral design or plantscaping industries. Entry-level jobs in sales, design, and plant care could lead to advancement as head designer, shop manager, supervisor of technicians, buyer and plant specialists as well as owning your own business. The key to employment in the floral design or plantscaping industries, in addition to having the required skills, is to be a service- and people-oriented person. You must enjoy helping and working with other people.
