Graduates of Joliet Junior College’s Turfgrass Management program have experience and skills in the basics of turf grass culture and maintenance, soils, fertilizers, pests, facilities, and equipment. Turfgrass managers are involved in all aspects of the turfgrass industry, from athletic field management and golf course operations to sales of turf grass related products. 

Opportunities are abundant for individuals who want to apply their skills and educational background to careers in the turf industry. Experienced managers can earn salaries comparable to that of most business executives. Employment potential for competent, educated turfgrass managers is very good. The area of golf course operations is particularly strong. Many other careers are possible within the turf industry, including state turf specialists, grounds manager for institutions, golf course designers, sports managers, and construction foreman.

Areas of study include: arboriculture, entomology, pathology, turfgrass management, landscape design, and equipment repair. In addition to the broad base of study, the A.A.S degree program includes 2 paid internship training periods at a related turfgrass industry. 

 

General Education Requirements: 16 Semester Hours


Select courses from the following groups:

Group I: Communications  - Must take either ENG 101 or ENG 130. (3 credit hours)

Group II: Social and Behavioral Sciences  - 3 credit hours required

Group III: Humanities and Fine Arts  - No specific minimum credit hours required.  This category is optional for AAS degrees.

Group IV: Math/Sciences  -Must take AGRI 126 (4 credit hours)

Group V: Career Enhancement  - No specific minimum credit hours required.  This category is optional for AAS degrees.

 

 

Major Core Electives: 8 Semester Hours


Select from any courses with HORT prefix with approval of advisor.

Total Required Hours: 69 Semester Hours
