Program Code: FA200

The professional interior designer is qualified by education, experience and examination by the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) to perform a variety of tasks. Interior designers analyze the client’s needs, goals, and life/safety requirements. They develop working drawings for non-load bearing walls, floor plans, lighting plans, select and specify furniture, materials/finishes, prepare bids, contracts and professional services which are necessary to successfully implement the final design solution.

The Interior Design program at JJC offers options for a career in residential design, contract design and office planning. Course offerings also include Universal design and barrier-free design applications.  Much of the coursework includes the use of computer-aided design and drafting (CADD). The program is accredited with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). The curriculum provides the necessary background for the graduate to sit for the Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) and the Certified Bath Designer (CBD) exams.

Students who complete the A.A.S. degree in Interior Design have a variety of career options. Those who choose may become a Registered Interior Designer, a Registered Residential Interior Designer, a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), a Certified Bath Designer (CBD), or work as a computer-aided Design and Drafting (CADD) specialist.

Students who choose to pursue a baccalaureate degree in interior design have the option of pursuing a BS degree through our 2+2 agreement with several four-year colleges. Graduates of the JJC A.A.S. degree program may also choose to continue their education at JJC by enrolling in a third year of education in Advanced Designer Certificate of Achievement program. In addition to academic preparation, we have an active Interior Design Club which includes student chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers (A.S.I.D) and National Kitchen and Bath (NKBA).
