Computer Information Systems Programming Option, A.A.S.

A computer programming degree generally involves studying a variety of programming languages. It allows students to work in a diverse industry within the information technology environments. Computer programmers are in high demand in today’s technologically advancing industries, and students enrolling in this major will receive formal, hands-on computer programming training that is necessary for today’s growing market. This major allows students to explore a variety of computer programming including Java, C++, or Visual Basic., and students may choose to specialize in specific language by selecting appropriate sequences. The most marketable areas include C++, Java, and object oriented programming. Students willing to continue their education for a bachelor’s degree can do so by transferring this degree to a four-year institution.

The most common career tracks for qualified students include: computer software engineer, computer system analyst, computer operator, applications programmer, systems programmer, computer instructor, and software administrator.

General Education Requirements: 18 Semester Hours


 Select 18 credit hours of courses from the following groups:

Group I: Communications  - Must take either ENG 101 or ENG 130. Minimum of 3 credit hours in this category

Group II: Social and Behavioral Sciences  - Minimum of 3 credit hours required in this category

Group III: Humanities and Fine Arts  - No specific minimum credit hours required.  This category is optional for AAS degrees.

Group IV: Math/Sciences  - Minimum of 3 credit hours required in this category

Group V: Career Enhancement  - No specific minimum credit hours required.  This category is optional for AAS degrees.

Department Electives: 4 Semester Hours


Take any course from CIOS, BUSINESS, or TECHNICAL departments

Total Required Hours: 64 Semester Hours
